The shape of itA taste of the journey

Days 1–5 · North IslandLand in Auckland and ease north into the green heart of the country — Hobbiton, the glowworm caves at Waitomo, and the volcanic drama of Tongariro, where the alpine crossing threads past the cone that played Mount Doom.

Days 6–7 · WellingtonThe coolest little capital in the world: harbourside cafés, the national museum, and a pilgrimage to Weta Workshop, the effects house that built Middle‑earth. Then the ferry across Cook Strait.

Days 8–11 · South IslandQueenstown and Glenorchy for the filming valleys and, if you’re brave, the adventure capital’s wilder side. A day into Fiordland to cruise Milford Sound. Alpine roads up to Aoraki / Mount Cook and the glaciers.

Day 12 · FarewellA last slow morning in the mountains before the long, dreamy flight home — already planning the return.

New Zealand’s summer (December–February) brings long golden days and the fullest access to alpine trails — and the highest prices. The shoulder seasons (April–May, September–October) are the sweet spot: fewer crowds, softer light, kinder fares. We watch the calendar and book early either way.
