Friday Flyday Nº7 — Halloween in Las Vegas

Everyone tells you Vegas is fake. That is the point of it. It is a city that decided to be a stage set and then committed harder than anywhere else on earth. Which means that on the one night a year when the whole world puts on a costume, Las Vegas is not doing something unusual — it is doing the thing it already does, with the volume up and forty thousand people helping. Halloween here is not an event the city hosts. It is the city, briefly being honest about itself.

The numbersWhy this year specifically

Halloween is on a Saturday — it lines up this way about twice a decade. The next Saturday Halloween after 2026 is 2037.
3h 05m, direct from Edmonton — WestJet and Flair both fly it nonstop. Leave in the morning, be on the Strip for lunch.
Fremont Street is free — the costume party under the canopy costs nothing to walk into, and it is the best photograph of the whole trip.
It is a desert in late October — around 24°C in the afternoon and near 12°C after dark. Costumes are survivable; in July they would not be.
The city just got its first MICHELIN guide since 2009 — awarded 26 August 2026. One two-star in the whole Southwest, and it is on the Strip.
Eight weeks out — which is late, not impossible. Flights are fine. It is the rooms that are going.

Thursday · Land and do nothing cleverWheels down mid-morning, on the Strip by noon. Do not schedule the first evening hard — walk it, eat somewhere good, lose forty dollars, go to bed.

Friday · The day sideThe part people forget exists. Red Rock Canyon is twenty minutes from the Strip; Valley of Fire is an hour. A morning in the desert makes the neon land completely differently that night.

Saturday · HalloweenSleep in. Costumes on by six. Downtown for the evening — Fremont Street under the canopy is where the city actually gathers, and it is a different crowd and a different century from the Strip. Back late, and the clocks go back that weekend, so it runs an hour longer than you planned.

Sunday · The recovery dayDeliberately empty. A pool morning, a long lunch, a show in the evening if you still have it in you.

Monday · One good thingA track day, a helicopter, a show, or the museums downtown. Then home Tuesday on the evening flight.

Three ways to do itHow much city you want

Comfortable — five nights mid-Strip in a good room, the Halloween night downtown, one show, one day trip into the desert, and enough left to eat properly. This is the version most people should book.
Elevated — a better resort with a pool worth the morning, a serious dinner or two, a proper show rather than whatever had tickets, and something with an engine in it — a supercar on a track, or a helicopter over the dam at dusk.
Extraordinary — a suite, a tasting menu at the top of the new guide, front-row seats, and a car that meets you at the aircraft. Vegas will take as much as you hand it; this is the tier where that stops being a joke.

TimingWhy it has to be booked now

This is the rare trip where waiting makes it strictly worse. Every other destination gets easier as the date approaches; Halloween in Las Vegas gets harder every week, because a fixed number of rooms is being sold into a weekend the entire western United States has also noticed.

Strip room rates run roughly 60–90% above a normal weekend for Halloween on a Saturday, and the gap widens the longer you leave it. Flights from Edmonton are the stable part of this equation. The room is the part that moves.

The honest position at eight weeks out: flights and a hotel are entirely bookable today. Some of the individual evenings are not — and the section below says exactly which.

Before you bookWhat is already gone

Nobody else writing about this weekend will tell you what you have missed, so here it is. Restaurant de Joël Robuchon took two MICHELIN stars on 26 August — the only two-star in the entire inaugural Southwest guide, in any of the four states. Its book was hard before that announcement. Assume it is gone for Halloween weekend and be delighted if it is not. Its sister room down the same corridor, L’Atelier, took one star and is a genuinely easier table.

The Haunted Museum’s after-hours tours sell out for Halloween before anything else on this list — if that is the reason you are going, book it before the flights. The Hoover Dam’s deep tour is suspended for elevator repairs with no announced return date; the shorter powerplant tour still runs and still goes inside. And Cirque shows go dark on scheduled nights that vary by production, so check the specific week before you build an evening around one.

None of that stops the trip. All of it stops a bad evening.
