Blossoms & Backstreets: A First Timer's Japan

A twelve-day arc from Tokyo's neon hum to Kyoto's lantern-lit lanes, timed for the cherry blossom tide, made for a couple tasting Japan for the first time. It moves at a considered pace — big cities balanced with mountain quiet and slow temple mornings — so you feel the country rather than merely tick it off.

Tokyo 4 | Hakone 2 | Kyoto 4 | Osaka 1 (+ final night near the airport)

Highlights

A taste of the journey

Days 1-4 | Tokyo — arrival & contrast. You'll ease past jet lag with a neighborhood-first approach: a serene garden and a historic temple precinct one morning, the sensory overload of a fashion district and a hidden cocktail bar the next. Expect a day trip out to blossom-heavy parklands, a sushi breakfast near the fish market, and enough unstructured time to get pleasantly lost.

Days 5-6 | Hakone — mountains & steam. Trading the metropolis for the Fuji foothills, you'll ride a scenic railway up through the hills, drift across a crater lake, and settle into ryokan rhythm — a multi-course seasonal dinner in your yukata, and long, restorative onsen soaks.

Days 7-10 | Kyoto — the old capital. The soul of the trip: temple gardens raked to perfection, a bamboo grove at first light, a geisha district at dusk, and hands-on moments — tea, or perhaps a craft workshop. Blossom season turns whole riverbanks and philosopher's paths into pink corridors.

Days 11-12 | Osaka & farewell. A shift in tempo — brasher, hungrier, joyfully chaotic — before a final restful night positioned for a smooth flight home.

Where you'd stay

When to go

Late March into mid-April for peak cherry blossoms — the payoff is spectacular, but bloom timing shifts yearly and demand is fierce, so we watch forecasts closely and book early. Early April also brings crisp, comfortable walking weather.
